About the day

Duncton quarry clay shoot was formed in the summer of 2018, primarily to support game shooter outside of the game season. It proved popular with all shooters and their guests so has expanded by virtue of its formal police and firearms licensing to allow for novice as well as experienced shooters to attend a fun and challenging days sport.

The clay shoot takes place over a mixture of ground primarily focused on the 150ft deep quarry but incorporates the upper woodland and fields which provides spectacular views of they south downs national park and surrounding landmarks.

The varied topography of they land allows for a wide variety of shooting. To simulate a mix of game drives over the six drives, these include a partridge drive across the fields, a roosting drive over the trees, as well as a mix of drives within the quarry ranging from quick response crossing clays through to sky high 150ft clays.

The campaign tent in the top fields provides the focal points for they day. The day is run as per a traditional game day which commence with sign in, safety briefing with light refreshments and pastries. They first two drives take place in they upper fields and woodland. Following the first two drives a break for elevenses provides refreshments including: soup, seasonal snacks and a re-stock of equipment if necessary. The following four drives take place in the quarry and provide the wide variety of challenging clays. Once all the drives have been completed the guests will return to the sign in area where a casual lunch will be served.

History of the shoot

The history to the quarry and its surrounding land is extensive and unique. The woodland was originally planted for coppicing to provide charcoal which was a much needed resource in the start of the 19th century. They old charcoal burning pits remind apparent adjoining the tracks on site.   They quarry itself is a agricultural lime quarry and commenced operations in 1952, and continues to provide their product today also traditional south downs tracks are supplied with a blend of chalk and flint sourced by the quarry. The landowners have embraced the biodiversity and work with the butterfly and conservation trust to allow migration routes through the woodlands. Ash die back has unfortunately impact the woodland in recent years and ongoing work with the forestry commission is taking place.
